From the very first sentence of reading page 110, I am surprised that Rita ix past 9 months pregnant. That must be a medical mystery. I think it is sweet and surprising that Chris prefers to have a son, “I am the first son of a first son, and I want to continue this cycle.” Although there is family meaning behind the gender of the baby, I believe as long as the baby is healthy, nothing matters.
The next chapter goes back to Chris’ past, locating back to New England area of Salem, Massachusetts. He made a new friend who shared the same literal arts career, his friend, Shadrack. “He was the perfect friend for me – so starved for company that he talked to mice in his studio. I had quit painting to write, and he was a poet who quit painting.” I believe it’s funny that Shardrack, in a way, taught Chris the art of approaching women, just random women sitting in bars. Chris lived the a single’s person life, and I believe finally life approached him when he received an invitation to his brother’s wedding. On page 120, you can tell the personality differences between Chris and his brother, Dane. Dane was the honorable son (until he was wrongfully arrested), while Chris was the wild child who performed illegal activities, “I stole an electric football game to clean the seeds from a quarter of marijuana…he was outraged by the tiny seeds rolling into the end zone.” Toward the end of page 127, you can get the sense that jealousy arises from Chris of Dane’s life. “Dane did everything properly, made all the correct decisions. He had a lovely wife, would eventually own nice things…”
The next chapter follows through the present in which Rita is still present. He goes back and tells the story when Rita caught a gar. He relates a lot of naturism in the chapters he talks about Rita.
After Chris moves to Boston into group housing; he lives in a new experience in a rooming house with “a pair of nitwits who called themselves “urban pioneers.”” One of the roommates brought food from the bakery she worked in, Diana. Another roommate was Sophia, who constantly consumed garlic in hopes of diminishing any foulness from her body. I believe it was hilarious that Sophia and Diana questioned Chris’ sexuality of him being homosexual. “I think you’ve got some lesbian in you, Chris. You’re like a sister to Diana and me.” Not too long, in today’s world, it was quite strange for a man to live with women and to not just live with men. Towards the end of this chapter, Shadrack encourages Chris to begin writing again, and not to end up like him. There is a great friendship between Chris and Shadrack. Although Chris is writing, he get a job as Naturalist, which is the perfect job for him.
Chris reveals the baby names he wants for his child, “Rebecca Marie.” I believe it was sweet and they are still determining what to name if the baby was a boy.
The words that I didn’t understand were, “sextant” which is “an astronomical instrument used to determine latitude and longitude at sea by measuring angular distances.” Another word is “renegade” which is “a person who deserts a party of cause for another or an apostate from a religious faith.” Another word I didn’t know was “etymology of death” which defines as “origin of death.”
